Relocalizing VT, Thursday: Armistice Day; New Leadership

Past event
Nov 11, 2021, 9 to 10:30 AM

Thursday morning on Central Vermont Community Radio: A local veteran explains the importance of referring to November 11 as Armistice Day rather than Veterans Day, and we introduce Brian Lowe, the new director of the Vermont Council on Rural Development.

9:00 - 10:00 am
What is it about fall holidays? October 12 is now called Indigenous Peoples Day in Vermont. Some people refer to Thanksgiving as the National Day of Mourning. And local activist Richard Czaplinski, with the Green Mountain Veterans for Peace, is among those calling for Veterans Day (November 11) to return to its earlier designation as Armistice Day. He'll explain why it's important to celebrate the end of a horrible war rather than the people who served in the military.

The mission of the Vermont Council on Rural Development so lines up with the themes of Relocalizing Vermont that staffers at VCRD have been on the show many times. Many communities in our listening area, including Plainfield and Marshfield recently, have benefited from VCRD's community visits. And now, Paul Costello has stepped down after decades of serving as the director, and Brian Lowe has stepped into Paul's shoes. Brian will tell us, among other things, how testing Burlington's sewage for Covid and organizing community mask making prepared him to helm VCRD.
