This Saturday, November 13th at 12:15 pm, the starting gun will fire for the start of the Girls New England XC Championship race in Thetford, Vermont, in which the Harwood girl's cross country team is competing.
This is the most ambitious and competitive team John Kerrigan has coached in his 40 years at the helm of Harwood cross country. All of the chips have fallen in place for this team to succeed. They are seeking a top 5 finish against teams from all over New England – some schools over three times the size of our small-town Vermont school. This team is healthy, prepared, and eager to compete.
The Harwood runners in this race include Ava Thurston, Britta Zetterstrom, Charlie Flint, Julia Thurston, Elisa Clerici, Celia Wing, and Caelyn McDonough. The alternates in the race are Hazel Lillis and Heidi Haraldsen. Those first seven girls came in 1st, 3rd, 4th, 9th, 10th, 17th, and 18th in the Division II State Meet, respectively. Hazel and Heidi competed in the Challenge (JV) race and came in 12th and 13th, respectively. They are all dedicated and crucial members of this amazing team that has come together in the 2021 Harwood cross country season. None of this would be possible without each and every one of them.
I would be remiss not to include some notes on 4-time Vermont Division II Girls Cross Country Individual Champion, Ava Thurston. Her main sport is Nordic skiing. She is one of the top U-20 Nordic skiers in the nation and has aspirations of being selected to the U.S. Ski Team. So… don't miss the future opportunity you might have while watching a certain NBC broadcast of a certain international event that takes place every four years to say "Hey! I saw that young woman race in person."
We have a "fan bus" to transport student supporters leaving from Crossett Brook Middle School at 10:15 am Saturday morning as well. It will return to Crossett Brook around 3:15 pm.
Come support this historical Harwood girl's cross country team! Again, the race begins at 12:15 pm at Thetford Academy. We hope to see you there.
