A Virtual Presentation
The League of Women Voters, in partnership with Kellogg-Hubbard Library, is pleased to present the first in its 2021/22 Speaker Series on "Racism and Public Health." The series will offer a survey of the issues, personal and community experiences with racism, the role of environmental health policy, and information about efforts ongoing in Vermont to eradicate the impact of racism on public health.
On Wednesday, November 10, Maria Mercedes Avila, Ph.D., will offer an overview of this pressing issue. Dr. Avila is Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the College of Medicine and in the College of Nursing, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Vermont. She has been involved in numerous federal programs, and provides consultation on Cultural and Linguistic Competency to several Department of Health and Mental Health grants. She has trained more than 1500 providers in the state. She teaches courses on Racism and Health Disparities in the U.S. Dr. Avila is also a member of the State of Vermont Racial Equity Advisory Panel.
