TIME CHANGE: Saturday, 11/13 at 1 PM not 11 AM
Hope to see you there!
I am working with some friends to conserve land at the Barge Canal off Pine Street in Burlington.
We will gather on Pine St. (across from dealer.com) on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 1 PM to give thanks & to demand that the city of Burlington immediately begin the process of conserving the land.
We want to give thanks to the natural process of remediation of the Barge Canal Superfund site. This wetland was ravaged by the former coal gasification plant -- closed in 1966 -- that dumped its toxic waste into the abandoned barge canal.
The land and water are filled with coal tar, PAHs, benzene and other toxic substances. The 8 acres fronting on Pine St. are for sale as prime development land.
It's time for the city to step up and lead the way toward conservation of the whole Barge Canal site, public and private.
We think that the first step in this process is to express gratitude to the land and its creatures for the continuing remediation work that they have done.
While the EPA and assorted contractors have tried to contain the toxins (with some limited success), Mother Nature has worked her magic and the land is slowly coming back to health.
A new office building, brewery or parking lot will only impede this process.
*** Rain or shine.
Wear a mask, bring signs and noisemakers/musical instruments.
We will solemnly raise a ruckus to celebrate real "nature-based solutions."
The event is organized by Save Open Space-Burlington (SOS-B).
WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO?
Talk to your friends and neighbors.
Send letters to Conservation Board (sgustin@burlingtonvt.gov), Parks and Rec (cwight@burlingtonvt.gov), City Councilors (CityCouncil@burlingtonvt.gov) supporting the conservation of all Barge Canal Land
