Cannibals. Clowns. Food. Life. Death. Love. A…musical saw? Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie) and Marc Caro's dark comedy Delicatessen has them all and more. A carnivalesque romp through a post-apocalyptic world, Jeunet and Caro's film revels in bringing together the high and the low in both narrative and film style, and in so doing finds some of the renewal that the topsy-turvy world of the carnival promises. Come for the beauty and stay for the grotesque. Or reverse that last thought, if that's more your cup of tea. Either way, Delicatessen is a fun and enjoyable cult classic that is worth seeing on the big screen. From 1991, France, 96 minutes, Rated R. In French with English Subtitles.
A discussion will follow the screening of the film, hosted by Peter Schweigert, PhD. Peter has degrees in Art History and Film Studies, and has taught at schools on the east and west coasts. After jettisoning a life in academia he found himself in St. Johnsbury, where he lives with his family and stays busy as a stay at home dad.
Admission is free.
Mask wearing is required in the Catamount Arts building. Proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test performed within 72 hours is required to attend any film programming.
