On behalf of the First Church in Barre Unitarian Universalists, greetings!
We will be celebrating Samhain (generally pronounced sah - win) this Sunday, October 31 and, as always, EVERYONE is invited! Samhain is an ancient Celtic festival celebrating the end of the harvest season and the transition to the colder, darker winter months.
One important aspect of our Samhain rituals will be an altar and opportunities to honor our ancestors and those we have lost. You're encouraged to bring a photo or memento of a person you'd like to honor - these will be placed on the altar during the worship service.
It's felt that the boundary between this world and the world to come becomes more transparent and fluid during Samhain. The altar and service will remind us of our gifts from those who've gone before us, and that, though gone from this world, they never truly leave our hearts.
Following the service, we'll have a shared meal in the Vestry downstairs (please see the signup link for food https://form.jotform.com/212763649413055) and we're going to do some pumpkin lantern carving and making of straw men and women. We'll provide the supplies and tools - just plan to wear something that you can work in.
The service will begin at 10:00 AM and the Samhain celebration will follow immediately thereafter. We hope to see you then!
