Keeping Families Together: How architecture can support aging, dying, & dignity
This talk will explore the current state of accessible housing in the US and aspects of Universal Design for families who are considering to care for loved ones at home. The second part of the session will aim for a ZOOM group discussion to include:
- Positive and challenging factors to think about when choosing home care.
- Is this option for everyone?
- Is our current way of dealing with aging, dying, and dignity acceptable? Our current architectural options?
- How do we, the creatives, want to change our culture in terms of aging, dying, and dignity, and actualize that change?

Recompose: Returning Our Dead to the Earth
Recompose is a public benefit corporation powered by people who believe in changing the current death care paradigm. We approach this work with energy, tenacity, and joy. Recompose utilizes the principles of nature to return bodies to the land, sequestering carbon and improving the health of our natural surroundings.

Open Ended: A conversation about designing for end of life and where to begin
How might we approach dying as intentionally as we do living? And where does design fit into this work? We tend to compost piles, carefully pack up material goods when relocating, and dutifully fill out heaps of paperwork. We also create unique spaces, gatherings, and celebrations for ourselves and our loved ones. Can we shift the paradigm for approaching our inevitable endings - and use what we know about living well to do so?

November 3rd - Nora El-Khauri Spencer from Hope Renovations in Carrboro, NC
At Hope Renovations, we inspire hope in women and older adults for a joyful and fulfilling future. We do this by empowering women to pursue living-wage jobs in the construction trades via our hands-on training program, while our construction program provides repairs and renovations that enable older adults to stay in their homes as they age.
