If you're looking for a job — or if you have teenagers! — you should come check out the Vermont Tech Jam next Saturday, October 23. It's an annual job fair/tech expo organized by Seven Days. This year it's at Hula in Burlington. Hula is where the old Blodgett Oven factory used to be, in the Lakeside neighborhood next to the St. John's Club. It's been transformed into a Silicon Valley-like renewable-energy-powered tech hub. Just seeing it is worth your time. There's nothing else quite like it in Vermont.

I've spent the last few months organizing this event. We've got 50+ employers coming, many of them companies you've probably never heard of — and some that you have, like BioTek/Agilent and GlobalFoundries. There are companies looking to fill entry-level and upper-level roles. Lots of them are looking for engineers of all kinds. They need sales, service and administrative staff, too.

If you or your kids are interested in fighting climate change, there are several companies focused on that and doing some really interesting things — most notably Beta Technologies, which is based at the Burlington airport and is pioneering electric aviation. You might have seen Beta's battery-powered prototypes flying overhead; I've spotted them over my house a few times. Beta will have its mobile flight simulator there, so you can try flying one of its aircraft! They take off and land vertically like helicopters and fly like fixed-wing planes. This is some serious sci-fi stuff, and it is happening right here in Vermont; Beta is hiring a ton more people and has an order for planes from UPS.

Everybody at the Tech Jam will be wearing masks. We're splitting up the event into two buildings to spread it out and we've split it into two sessions to reduce crowding.

The first session, from 10-1, is free. The second session costs $10 in advance/$15 at the door and includes admission to the keynote presentation, which features the CEO of Beta Technologies, Kyle Clark, and Martine Rothblatt, CEO of United Therapeutics, Beta's first customer. Kyle grew up in Essex. Martine has Vermont ties and is also an internationally known innovator. Google her and you'll see what I mean.
