Beavers in Autumn
Meet at the Marlboro Post Office at 4 pm on Saturday, October 16
Free
There is no better season to enjoy the life of a beaver pond than autumn when beavers are busy preparing for winter. This is also the time of year that is blessedly free of biting insects and when the colors of autumn are reflected in the waters of the pond. On this late afternoon excursion we will visit a couple of beaver ponds at the headwaters of the Green River. Patti Smith, naturalist at the Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center, is a longtime watcher of beavers. She will interpret the signs of autumnal beaver activity and will talk about the ecology and seasons of life of a beaver pond. These sites are both on quiet backroads and provide wonderful opportunities for wildlife watching year-round. They exist, in part, because of the flow devices installed to keep the beavers from plugging culverts. Biologist Skip Lisle has developed these systems for resolving beaver conflicts and will join us to talk about how the devices work and why he has dedicated his life to helping beavers to do their work.
This program is part of a beaver education series sponsored by the Green River Watershed Alliance. For information, email patti@beec.org.
