Backyard Composting Workshop
Saturday, October 16th, 10am - 11:30am
Tommy Thompson Community Garden in the Intervale.
Meet at Pavilion

The main focus will be on Backyard Composting. We will be covering the following subjects: Building composting piles and cues as to how compost piles work. Are the piles heating up properly? Do they enough moisture? Are they too dry? And explain other subjects such as the carbon to nitrogen ratio and how often piles should be turned..

* Where to locate your compost with access to sun and water and shade
* The Green Cone Digester
* What to put in your compost - starting with the basic brown and green materials - one of the main green ingredients includes food scraps plus leaves, weeds, old plants, mulch and more plus compost as a starter.
* Use your hands to feel for heat and dryness, your nose for ammonia (too much nitrogen) and your eyes for all of the above.
* Combining compost and cover crops for a healthier soil
* Compost Bins: Types of Bins and Location. & Compost Piles

The October 16th workshop will also include:
Extending the Growing Season & Putting the Garden to Rest. Learn what cover crops to plant in the Fall, what to clean up and what not to clean up and how to prepare your garden for winter. Other topics include planting garlic, storing root crops and more.

Ron Krupp and Fred Schmidt will be leading the Backyard Composting Workshop.
