In an attempt to rid ourselves of the doom and gloom of the Covid 19 Pandemic, and the shadow that it cast upon us all, the Dover Library will host a Covid Stomp Dance If You Want To Event with the musical group Trio Mambo. The Group's Bio: Julian Gerstin, percussionist and composer, has spent a lifetime studying and performing traditional and popular music from Martinique, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Eastern Europe and the Arab world, as well as American funk, zydeco, and a variety of jazz from New Orleans brass bands to contemporary improvisation. He currently appears with the Puerto Rican traditional ensemble Bomba de Aquí, Latin jazz group Trio Mambo, soul band VT Shakedown, and as leader of the JG Sextet, performing his original jazz/Caribbean compositions. In addition to the Sextet, Julian has composed for chorus, theater, and dance companies. His CD releases include the JG Sextet's "The Old City" and "The One Who Makes You Happy," the solo percussion project "Littoral Zone," and "Music for the Exploration of Elusive Phenomena," recorded with 20 musical friends.
Julian has a PhD in Anthropology and has published articles in numerous academic journals based on his research in Martinique and Cuba. Recently retired from academia, he continues teaching community-based classes at the Vermont Jazz Center, where he is also President of the Board of Directors. In 2020 he completed the MFA in Music Composition program at the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
Wes Brown is a first call bassist in the Pioneer Valley. He works extensively throughout New England and overseas. Some of the greats he has worked with are: Earl "Fatha" Hines, Wadada Leo Smith, Anthony Davis, Marilyn Crispell, Ed Blackwell, Fred Ho's Afro-Asian Ensemble.
The bands compositions range from latin grooves to the avant guarde, reflecting the particular peculiarities of each musician's inner musical life.
