Poets Toussaint St. Negritude & Megan Buchanan to Read

Vermont poets TOUSSAINT ST. NEGRITUDE & MEGAN BUCHANAN will read their work this Sunday, October 3, at 3 O'Clock at the Old West Church for 2021's Wrought & Written: WORDS OUT LOUD. This will be the 3rd and final weekend of the Sunday afternoon reading series held in tandem with Art at the Kent's 20/20 HINDSIGHT exhibit.

A bit about this Sunday's poets:

If you've enjoyed the sculpture on the grounds of the Kent last year (or this year), you've spotted a whimsical poem by MEGAN BUCHANAN, "Two Odes," featured on the Outside Broadside by illustrated and printed by letterpress printer Kelly McMahon (in the display case by John Parker). This signed limited edition broadside is available for purchase at the Kent throughout the exhibit.

Megan Buchanan's poetry collection Clothesline Religion, published by Green Writers Press, was nominated for the 2018 Vermont Book Award. Find her work in The Sun Magazine, make/shift, Mom Egg Review, A Woman's Thing, and elsewhere, including the anthologies Roads Taken: Contemporary Vermont Poetry and Healing the Divide (both GWP) as well as Dream Closet: Meditations on Childhood Space (Secretary Press). She's grateful for support from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the Vermont Arts Council, Vermont Performance Lab, and the Vermont Studio Center. Megan Buchanan lives in Putney.

If you've been inside the Kent this year you will have seen (and if you haven't you will not want to miss!), the unique, hand-crafted hats made by Toussaint St. Negritude on display on the first floor of the Tavern, along with a poem of his adjacent.

Former Poet Laureate of Belfast, Maine, poet, bass clarinetist, and composer TOUSSAINT ST. NEGRITUDE conjures whole liberations in full tempo. Poet Gwendolyn Brooks described his work as "full of sweet sounds and surprises." Originally from San Francisco, Toussaint has lived broadly across the African Diaspora, from the sacred mountains of Haiti to the Coltrane District of North Philadelphia. He is the leader of the band Jaguar Stereo, a free-form ensemble of his own poetry and improvisational jazz, and his works have been widely published and recorded for over 40 years. On an alpine sanctuary facing east, Toussaint St. Negritude continues to thrive in the farthest elevations of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom.
