Problems in Irish Research, Part 1: Crossing the Pond
Sept. 25, 2021
Irish genealogy can be challenging - common family names and the loss of records, to name a few. The biggest problems are usually (1) getting to a location in Ireland and (2) locating enough Irish records to identify your ancestor. In Part 1 Ed McGuire addresses the first issue - starting with the importance of knowing when your ancestors arrived, where they settled and which church they attended. He'll then describe a proven process for using U.S. records collections to help locate where they lived before they emigrated. Ed will list the repositories, records and websites most likely to help you answer these questions. Handout included.

Problems in Irish Research, Part 2: Finding Your Ancestor in Irish Records
Oct. 2, 2021
This is the second of two talks discussing how to find your Irish ancestors. In this presentation Ed McGuire focuses on the most useful Irish collections for identifying your specific ancestors and their parish or townland. He'll explain the various terms used to describe Irish land jurisdictions and identify the major record sets, how to use them, as well as specific search strategies. From parish registers to vital records, census substitutes to court cases, Irish newspapers and even DNA testing - they'll all be covered along with examples.

All VT Genealogy Library classes will be held on Zoom on Saturdays from noon to 1:30. The cost is $10.00. To learn more, and to register for the classes visit www.vtgenlib.org. You can also visit our Facebook page or call at 802-871-5647.
