This Thursday, September 23rd, The Three Penny Taproom, 108 Main St., Montpelier will be presenting The VT Bluegrass Pioneers, who consist of Banjo Dan Lindner on banjo/guitar/vocals; his brother, Willy Lindner, on mandolin/guitar/vocals and Danny Coane on guitar/banjo/vocals. They are veteran bluegrass musicians who were, in fact, kind of "pioneers" of this style music in Montpelier/Central Vermont dating back to the early 60's-70's period. The Pioneers have been together as a band for about 5 years now. The Lindner brothers were, of course, founders of Banjo Dan & the Mid-Nite Plowboys, one of Vermont's premier bluegrass bands from 1972-2012, and Danny C has performed with a number of country, honky-tonk, bluegrass and rockabilly bands including The Throbulators and The Starline Rhythm Boys to name two prominent ones. Danny started playing bluegrass music in his native Montpelier back around 1962 and first met the Lindners in 1971 when they came up here from Baltimore. The Pioneers are normally a quartet with Sam Blagden (once with the Plowboys) on bass/vocals, but it will be just the trio tonight at Three Penny if the show is held outside on the "parklet" or a duo with only Danny and Willy if held inside in the event of rain or cold weather. Either way, it will be real-deal, old-school bluegrass music!
