SOME FAQ'S PUT TOGETHER BY KAREN PAUL (W-6)
**********************
-- Who besides the eight Ward appointees will be on the committee, or is that up to the committee? The committee will be the 8 ward representatives. No elected officials, only 8 residents selected by their respective NPAs.
-- Should we be appointing alternates as well, or is that up to us, as individual Wards or as All Wards? You raise a good point. Unlike the last go-around with redistricting, the AdHoc committee will probably only meet 3 times; hopefully the 8 ward representatives can make all 3 meetings. There will be a doodle poll that will go out right after September 16 when Ward 5 will meet. They will be the last to select a representative.
-- What resources will be available to the sitting committee? One of the assistant City Attorneys will staff the committee so there will be coordination regarding meeting dates, locations and also will help with the report that will come back to the Council.
-- What resources will the City commit for outreach before the selection of the committee? I am working on the City posting about the committee as it gets a bit closer (into August). The City will post this to FPF and I have committed to get every Councilor to post on FPF so we should have a flurry of activity in about a month regarding redistricting. Of course, we would welcome your input if you have any suggestions.
-- Is there a formal charge beyond lines 27-30 of the 6/28 resolution? The charge of the committee is to hold 2 public meetings and gather as much input as possible on the community's impressions, priorities and preferences regarding the current system, going to ward only or district only, the number of councilors residents would like representing them (a smaller ward with only one councilor, a larger area with two like they have now…)
-- It seems that the work of this committee will only be considered if there is a >10% change - is that correct? If so, perhaps should this committee hold off until the figures are in? No point in getting folks all excited for no reason. It was the unanimous opinion of the Council that the time to begin this work is this fall, so if we do need to redistrict, we can get started and not delay. The last redistricting was highly contentious and took years. We wanted to find a process that could be nonpartisan (as much as possible) and one we could all agree to. So far, we are on solid ground.
-- Is the six week time for the work of this committee a strict requirement? The six week timeframe will allow us time to possibly have a Charter change ready for the March 2022 ballot. That is our goal if at all possible. We may not be able to meet that deadline and if we need more time, so be it. So, to answer your question, it's our goal – it's not a strict requirement.
