Posting for Diane Nichols-Fleming, School Board member from Berlin:

Greetings from the Washington Central School Board! We hope you are having a safe and restful summer. After taking a break for most of July, our board is back to work and here are some of the recent highlights:

The board is excited to welcome our newest members, Maggie Weiss from Calais, McKaylyn Leclerc from Worcester, and Ursula Stanley from Middlesex, who were recently appointed to fill vacancies. We greatly appreciate all of the excellent candidates who offered to serve and we hope that you will consider running for the board in our next elections in early 2022.

At our Wednesday meeting, we received an update on our COVID safety plan for the coming school year. All students and employees will be back in person and everyone will be masked at least for the first weeks. Our new COVID Coordinator Maria Melekos explained that staff will be monitoring trends, staying flexible and communicating as we go. A big thank you to everyone for helping keep our community safe.

The board also received a financial update from our new Business Manager Susanne Gann. We are pleased to report that our district is in solid shape financially in part thanks to an influx of federal funding associated with the pandemic.

Our board wants to increase our communication with and outreach to the community. As a next step, we would like to invite you to a virtual community forum at 6:30pm on Wednesday September 1. We will provide updates on our COVID safety plan and U-32 student dismissal time and there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. More information and a meeting link will be available soon.

As always feel free to reach out to us with any questions, comments and ideas (our contact information can be found at https://www.wcsu32.org/domain/145 ). Have a great rest of your summer.
