On Saturday, August 14 from 12:30 to 2 PM, Annette Gordon-Reed will do a reading from her recent book, On Juneteenth, at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in the Hayes Room, 135 Main St, Montpelier. Gordon-Reed is an historian, Harvard professor, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning author. Her book explores Black Texans' exercise of voting rights after Juneteenth 1865, denial of those rights during the South's redemption period, and today's fight to preserve them. Following the reading, Gordon-Reed will take questions from the audience. Phoenix Books will be selling On Juneteenth and Gordon-Reed will be available to sign books for those who purchase one or bring their own copy. At 3 PM, you can hear Annette Gordon-Reed and many other esteemed speakers at the Vermont Suffrage Centennial Alliance's event--Hard Won, Not Done: Voting Matters--on the State House Lawn.
