Read to Xander!

Past event
Sep 9, 2021, 3:30 to 4 PM

The MCL is so excited to host Xander, a friendly canine from Therapy Dogs of Vermont to listen to little ones read. Xander is calm, comforting and listens without judgement making him an ideal pal for hesitant readers. Call 888-3853 or email Cari at cvarner@centenniallibrary.org to reserve a spot. We only have four spots, but luckily Xander will be back each month!

About Therapy Dogs of Vermont:
Therapy Dogs of Vermont (TDV) is an all-Volunteer, non-profit organization of well mannered, sweet-tempered, people-loving dogs and their handlers. Our handler/canine teams work toward the emotional health of people in a variety of settings such as hospitals and other health-related venues, nursing and retirement homes, child and adult day care centers, correctional facilities, and schools. Canine Therapy Offers These Benefits:
• Brings joy and laughter to institutions that might feel sterile, cold, and frightening
• Gives something to do, talk, and think about other than illness, difficulties, or problems
• Provides a source of touch and affiliation
• Boosts morale and lowers stress levels
• Facilitates communication and breaks the ice
• Stimulates the senses, encouraging exercise and activity
• Helps people cope with illness, loss, depression, and loneliness

Our dogs offer love, affection, and patience— bringing immense joy and comfort to the many people we serve. Often these canine friends have a profound ability to touch those not engaged by other kinds of therapies. While it may not always be possible to quantify the benefits of dog therapy, the magical interaction possible between animal and human is unmistakable. Tears dry, frowns become smiles and inactive hands caress soft fur. Silence becomes a conversation whispered softly in a dog's ear.
