The Burlington Police Commission's monthly meeting is July 27, 2021 at 6pm at Contois Auditorium. This month, we are fortunate to have Shay Totten and Vickie Crocker from Mental Health First for Burlington (MHF), a family-led, grassroots movement calling for immediate and substantial change in how we serve children and young adults with mental health issues and disabilities. Shay and Vickie will make a presentation to the Commission on alternatives to the current policing model of responding to mental health. MHF is working to bring the CAHOOTS model, adopted in Eugene, Oregon, to Burlington. This presentation is timely for two reasons. First, mental health calls to the police department have doubled since 2012 to over 900 calls a year since. At the same time, Burlington seeks alternative models of public safety, including alternatives to responses to mental health calls.
We encourage interested Burlingtonians to join us at this meeting, or to watch the presentation of MHF on CCTV, following our meeting.
