MRVARI Anti Racism Discussion Tonight

Please join our group this Sunday evening, 6:30, at the Village Meeting House (ground floor of the Waitsfield Church), to discuss the effects of systemic racism on ourselves and our society, and to explore the ways in which we can counteract its destructive influences.

Implicit bias can be a complex, challenging concept, especially here in rural Vermont, where few people of color live. It's easy (especially for those of us who are white) to stay silent on the subject, for fear of saying something incorrect or offensive -- indeed, we've been subtly trained to do so since birth! The problem with silence is that it tends to keep us from growing and learning. Most of us sense that something is wrong, and wish that we could make things better. But how?

The intention of our group is to avoid habitual, corrosive silence, instead engaging in respectful exchange with our neighbors. These meetings push our thinking, as we work to identify our own blind spots, to practice clear communication in potentially volatile settings, and to identify actions steps. The work is humbling, fascinating, and necessary.

MRVARI (Mad River Valley Anti-Racism Initiative) is an open, flexible, welcoming group. We meet every 4th Sunday at 6:30, in the Village Meeting House. Newcomers are always welcome. We hope to see you there!
