The next Rochester Public Library book club meeting will be discussing various books about women who undertook great challenges or long awaited changes in their lives.
"Go simple, go solo, go now," echoes across the theme of our book selections.
Women like Doris Haddock, better known as Granny D, who at age 90 completed a 14 month walk from Los Angeles to the U.S. Capital building to draw attention to the issue of campaign finance reform.
Women like Emma Gatewood who as a great-grandmother told her family she was going for a walk and hiked the then little know Appalachian Trail.
Women like Audrey Sutherland, who at age 60 undertook a solo voyage by kayak along the Inside Passage.
Women like Celia Ryker who having never slept in a tent and suffered with balance issues, undertook walking the Long Trail at age 60.
Women like Alexandra David-Neel, who while she led an extraordinary life of 101 years, was the first European woman to explore the forbidden city of Lhasa in 1924.
And women like Mary Ann Robertson Moses who at age 77 finally turned her artistic talents loose to become Grandma Moses, our most famous folk artist.
Copies of books can be picked up at the Rochester Public Library to read for our August 11th at 7:00 discussion at the library.
