Shawn Lane of Lane’s Computer Repair will be presenting an Intro to PC Computers and Computer Basics workshop in Hardwick, VT on Sunday May 18, 2014 from 12:00pm - 2:00pm. The workshop will be held in the open space, on the 2nd Floor, of the Hardwick Inn (AKA The Centennial Building) just above the Hardwick Clothing Company and Connie's Kitchen.
What will the workshop cover and who should attend?
Have you wondered what all the fuss is about Facebook, Twitter, eBay, Craigslist and other social media buzz words and why everyone now a days seems to be on the internet? Have you considered maybe getting a computer but are afraid you won’t be able to use it or even know where to begin? Maybe you have a computer and are having trouble getting online, creating files, moving things around, surfing the Web or every time you try to do anything on it you start cussing like a sailor. Quite possibly you know just enough about computers to get online, check your email and get into a bit of trouble but you’d like to learn more. If any of this sounds like you then you should attend this workshop to learn more. Some of the things that will be discussed during the workshop are:
Why is Windows 8 so different, why is Windows XP no longer supported and when should I upgrade?
Why is my computer slowing down and how can I fix it?
What are viruses, spyware, malware, etc. and how do I keep my computer safe from them and other dangers?
Where did these programs and or pop ups come from; I didn’t Install them?
Is my computer too old? How do I know when it's time to invest in a new computer or affordably upgrade my current one?
What are Windows updates? Should I install them? Are they important?
What is a computer? What are the different parts of it and how do they work?
What is Gigahertz, Gigabytes, Terabytes, megabytes, Bits, Bytes, nibbles, etc?
What is the internet and how does it work?
What is the cloud and why is it such a big deal?
What is an operating system and what one do I need or should I use?
What is a Web browser and which one should I use? Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome, Opera, Internet Explorer?
Why does Adobe Reader / Flash Player and Java keep asking me to update them?
What is safe Web surfing and how do I find stuff online?
How do I set up email and what one should I use?
How do I back up my files and what is the best way to do it?
And so much more!
Come with your questions and I will be sure to have answers. I would also recommend bringing a notepad and pen to take notes with. You are also encouraged to bring your computer with you; there’ll be plenty of room provided for them. Outlets and power strips will be made available for everyone who brings a computer.
Due to limited seating space of only 12 people, this workshop will probably fill fast so please RSVP as soon as you possibly can. Drinks and a light snacks will be provided.
