Underhill Invasive Species Work Party, Saturday

Past event

THE SHORT VERSION:

Work party to manage Japanese Knotweed at Crane Brook, this Saturday, 7/3, 10:00 - noon. Meet at the parking lot just past the town garage on New Road. Bring tools to cut or dig knotweed along the roadside.

THE DETAILS:

The Underhill Conservation Commission continues its efforts to control Japanese knotweed along the Crane Brook Trail this summer. We are using a few different manual methods in an attempt to determine which is the least labor-intensive and the most effective, with a goal of protecting the Crane Brook from this prolific invasive without using herbicides.

We intend to hold "work parties" every few weeks throughout the growing season, and we invite you to join us. We'll pull, dig, and cut knotweed using hand tools like mattocks, pulaskis, shovels, loppers, hand sickles, and swingblades.

The next work party is this Saturday, 7/3, from 10 a.m. until noon. Although we'd love to have your help for the full two hours, please feel free to come late or leave early. Any time you can contribute will be greatly appreciated!

Please sign up for this work party and future sessions throughout the summer in this document--https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-BCkLUaDuTZzkEQZUHz0csBw1Mtx7zdf2Bc9QrzmX_g/edit.

We'll meet at the parking area just past the Town Garage on New Road at 10:00 and will walk north on the trail (old road).

Please bring any tools you have. And please bring a mask. Hopefully, everyone is fully vaccinated, but if someone has concerns, we might want to wear masks when we're in close proximity.

Depending on the number of volunteers, we hope to expand our efforts in future work parties to work on other invasive species on Town land, such as honeysuckle, wild (or poison) parsnip, buckthorn, and more.
