The Science of Companion Planting

Companion planting has long lived in the lore of home gardeners. Perhaps you've always wondered whether those spots you reserved for marigolds were really doing any good. Or, you've watched hornworms decimate your tomatoes yet again and have asked the heavens whether there was anything else you could have done. This workshop will share some of the most recent science about companion planting for pollination, pests, nutrition, and more followed by an open discussion to share questions, ideas, and experiences among fellow gardeners.
The workshop will be led by Emma Schneider. Emma is a home gardener in Brattleboro and has volunteered in various capacities related to plants and public education (gleaning, community and school gardens, K-12 school env. education classes, the Retreat Farm). She has worked as a professor of Environmental Studies (Humanities) at Gettysburg College and as a high school Humanities instructor at Compass School in Westminster. Emma has been interested in companion planting for many years and is always playing with new combinations. She trained as a UVM Master Gardener in the spring of 2020 and enjoys opportunities to share garden science with fellow enthusiasts.
