Celebrate Juneteenth with Free Admission to Rokeby Museum
Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, two thousand Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, on the western edge of the former confederate states, to inform still enslaved persons of their legal free status. This occurred two months after Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia, and two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Black Texans declared the day a holiday and the holiday spread to other cities and states.
To celebrate this day of freedom, Rokeby Museum is free to the public on Saturday, June 19th. We invite you to visit our exhibit "Free & Safe: The Underground Railroad in Vermont".
In addition to this exhibit, our seasonal exhibit "A Modern Artist: The Commercial Art of Rachael Robinson Elmer, outbuildings, and story walk ("Henry's Freedom Box) are open. Guided Tours of the site will be available at $5 for non-members and will take place at 11 AM and 2 PM.
