Japanese Knotweed Work Party June 12

THE SHORT VERSION:

Work party to manage Japanese Knotweed at Crane Brook, this Saturday, 6/12, 10:00 - noon. Meet at the parking lot just past the town garage on New Road.

THE DETAILS:

The Underhill Conservation Commission continues its efforts to control Japanese knotweed along the Crane Brook Trail this summer. We are using a few different methods in an attempt to determine which is the least labor-intensive and the most effective, with a goal of protecting the Crane Brook from this prolific invasive without using herbicides.

We intend to hold "work parties" every few weeks throughout the growing season, and we invite you to join us. The next work party is this Saturday, June 12, from 10 a.m. until noon. Although we'd love to have your help for the full two hours, please feel free to come late or leave early. Any time you can contribute will be greatly appreciated!

Please sign up for this work party and future sessions throughout the summer in this document--http://tiny.cc/uccinv.

We'll meet at the parking area just past the Town Garage on New Road at 10:00 and will walk north on the trail (old road).

Our focus will be on cutting and digging the knotweed, so please bring at least one of the following, if you own one: clippers, hand sickle, loppers, shovel, rake, mattock, or pulaski.

Please also wear a mask and plan to practice social distancing. Once we know that everyone is fully vaccinated, we may decide to skip the masks.

Depending on the number of volunteers, we hope to expand our efforts in future work parties to work on other invasive species on Town land, such as honeysuckle, wild (or poison) parsnip, buckthorn, and more.
