Welcome to round 2 of our fourth year of tackling wild parsnip at Morse Park/MCS! We are making good progress with this project! During round 1 last week we saw fairly light numbers in the northern half of the park as a result of everyone's contribution over the past three summers. We are seeing an improvement near the MCS field as well. Newcomers to the project are welcome! This effort is good for our kids, pets, and selves! No experience needed and we'll help you get started. It is work, but not hard work. Easy to have a conversation or work on your own, as you like, with whatever social distancing suits you.
Meet at the pavilion in Morse Park and we'll make a quick pass on the northern end of the park, which is the area of lightest infestation and work our way south after that. That will probably be the goal for this first round and we'll move south in future sessions. Usually we go for about 90 minutes, but you are free to come and go as needed.
Experienced "parsnipinators" will know what to do. Newcomers will get a demo of pulling and/or using a shovel to slice the parsnip root and coaching as needed. A growing number of residents have their own specialized parsnip shovels and we will have a few extras on hand to share. Shovels are not for digging, but just to push/kick through the carrot-like parsnip root underground. Many plants can also be hand-pulled, particularly after a rain.
What to wear/bring: long pants and sleeves are a must, along with gloves and sturdy boots/shoes (no open-toed shoes). Hat, eye protection, & bug spray are recommended. We have some Parsnip Predator shovels to share, and some new ones to sell. If you have your own Parsnip shovel, bring it along or almost any round point shovel will do.
See you Friday June 11 at 7:30! (Rain date Saturday, June 12)
