Win a Free Composter!
The Southern Windsor/Windham Counties Solid Waste Management District and the Cavendish Energy Committee are hosting a workshop on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. in the Cavendish Town Elementary School, Main Street, Proctorsville. Masks and physical distancing encouraged.
It is against VT. law to throw food scraps into household trash, with the exception of meat and bones. Residents must either compost their own food waste or join others who do. This rule has long applied to restaurants, grocery stores, and other food generators. The rules are mandatory for households, and here's the thing: composting is easy!
Ham Gillett of the Southern Windsor/Windham Counties Solid Waste Management District willl discuss the basics of home composting and other options, such taking food scraps to transfer stations and curbside pick-up.
All attendees will be eligible to win a new Soil Saver composter. These bins normally retail for $100, but will be available to workshop attendees for $55. Please bring exact change or a check; there will be no way to process credit cards. A second drawing will be held for a compost pail, good for kitchen countertop use to gather scraps. These pails will also be available for $5 each.
Composting is great for the garden, for the yard, and fairly pricey if you have to buy it at a store. To sign up, please email cavendishcommunityconservation@gmail.com. If you'd like to purchase a composter but can't attend the workshop, let us know. Everyone welcome!
