Is the Garimella Administration Leading UVM on a Destructive Path?
A Public Debate Sponsored by the Lawrence Debate union

May 25 at 7 pm, via YouTube livestream: https://youtu.be/f3PDkIPX_GM

Co-sponsored by UVM United Academics, UVM United Against the Cuts, the Vermont AFL-CIO, and the Will Miller Social Justice Lecture Series

The UVM administration insists that program terminations, faculty and staff layoffs, the closure of the Campus Children's School, and reorganization of academics campus-wide are a necessary response to persistent budget woes and a change in student demographics, interests, and needs. But their plans have been met with widespread campus and community dissent, including a petition of No Confidence in the Leadership of President Garimella that's drawn some 3,500 signatures. Is the administration leading UVM to a better future or on a path of destruction?

Four of LDU's top debaters will team up with Beth Mintz, Professor Emerita of Sociology, and Dan Munteanu, incoming Biology doctoral student, for this public debate* about the struggle for the future of Vermont's public research university. Helen Morgan Parmett, Edwin W. Lawrence Forensic Professor of Speech, will moderate, and Jacques Bailly, associate professor in Classics, will provide closing reflections on the debate's lessons and the struggle for UVM's future.

*Because the UVM administration has declined the invitation of the Lawrence Debate Union to participate in this urgent civic discussion, the debate team members will draw exclusively on the administration's public communications to represent their views and justifications.
