How do the words "racial justice" land on you -- in your mind, in your body? Do they evoke a longing for a better world? A pang of guilt? An annoyance or irritation that you can't seem to find the words for, but that feels deep and real? Whoever you are, whatever your background, you are probably not immune to the feelings evoked by the topic.
For several years now, the Mad River Valley Anti-Racism Initiative has provided a setting in which neighbors can find support and guidance in exploring the vital, complex issue of racial justice. We come together to learn, grow, wonder, and respectfully challenge one another, continually resisting the temptation to point a righteous finger at others.
Instead, month after month, we remember to look within. We remind ourselves that, in order to bring about meaningful change, we must keep the focus on our own unconscious, internalized worldview -- and on our own good hearts.
We have all been taught not to talk deeply about these questions. Yet when we push beyond this learned aversion, the learning becomes very rich, often leading to conscious action and healthy change! And while the work can be painful, it can also be exhilarating.
Our time together can be deep and provocative. Comforting, pat answers are quickly outgrown and discarded. Guilt is acknowledged, identified as a generally unhelpful emotion, then dismissed. The phrase "like-minded people" ceases to hold our interest. For every realization we come to, we ponder all that we DON'T know or understand.
Please feel free to join us, even if you've not yet attended one of our sessions. While we hope to return to face-to-face meetings soon, this month's meeting will occur via Zoom, this Sunday evening 5/23/21, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. Please email Pat Folsom at pfols@gmavt.net for the link. Hope to see you there!
Respectfully,
