I just got official approval so it's time to announce - Johnson Speaks will be returning, coming up on Saturday, June 5, 7-9 PM, at Johnson's Community Pizza Oven/Legion Field! Our first event last year was a blast, with stories by Rebecca Flieder, Jasmine Yuris, Steve Roberts, and Athena Parke bringing laughs, tears, and much-needed connection to our audience. Then COVID hit and made in-person gatherings impossible - but with health guidelines relaxing as more folks get their vaccines, we are more than ready to get going again!
This year, we hope to provide the same high-quality stories, as well as opening things up to people who want to present original poetry or other spoken word to the group. (If you are interested in speaking, GET IN TOUCH WITH ME ASAP! Message on FB or email me at shaynewspence@gmail.com)
The only rules are the following:
- Each speaker is given 10 minutes maximum
- No speeches, sermons, sales pitches, or stand-up routines
- If you come, stay for the whole event. If you must leave, do so between speakers
- Listen attentively, engage with speakers' stories
- NO JUDGMENT!
And since this will be the first in-person gathering for many folks for some time, we figure the best suggested theme for us to offer up for this first event is "REUNION"! Stories/poems/spoken word does not have to fit this theme, but bonus points if they do.
Being at the Community Oven, we are happy to say that pizza will be available, but since we are a small operation, we are only able to offer free pizza as supplies last. More details to come on this front in the weeks to come.
And last but certainly not least, this event will comply with all existing COVID regulations at the time of the event. At the June 5 event, that likely means masks and social distancing will still be required. As such, come prepared - bring a blanket to lay on, a lawn chair, whatever you may want to stake out your space on the lawn.
