We are a community group with over 300 years of combined experience & formal education in teaching, school & district leadership, community development, law, facilities management, and financial planning, with representatives from all five towns that began meeting in October 2020, with a growing number of people joining since, to research, discuss and collaborate on ways that we can continue to provide place-based education by maintaining schools in each town.
What we set out to do: Our goal was to determine a solution that accomplished the following objectives:
1. Build on the small school research that highlights the district's current assets well worth preserving.
2. Observe the critical role that a local standalone 5-8 middle school can play in promoting student achievement, social/emotional development, and preparation for high school.
3. Keep a school in every town and do not require any construction or capital improvement.
4. Keep fewer kids from spending hours on a school bus every day.
5. Create a solution that will root our problem by attracting people who want local schools to move here.
6. Avoid a merger with ANWSD-avoiding the time and energy required by both districts.
