Johnson will celebrate Ash Tree Awareness Week and Arbor Day with a number of activities on Friday, May 2nd. Sue Lovering and the Conservation Commission have coordinated lots of action.
Arbor Day has been celebrated for 130 years as a way to set aside a special day for tree planting. It has been quite awhile since Johnson targeted the day to remind folks about the importance of trees. With an emphasis on the potential for an emerald ash borer invasion, the dastardly green bug will be front and center throughout the day. We know he will sASHay down Main Street along with some dignitaries from Forests & Parks and UVM Extension so be on the look-out for the out-of-towners.
At the elementary school there will be a tree planting and much more during the school day. In the village, DJs will start the day with a theme-related muffin and offer a Big Bug sandwich for lunch. Downtown will feature a green bug pizza on Friday’s menu.
At the college, students have purple-tagged some ash trees with the hope that visitors will regularly check the over-story to make sure the trees remain healthy.
If you want to learn more about Arbor Day in Johnson on Friday, contact Sue Lovering (635-8315) or me. Specific times are a work-in-progress. We hope you will join us for the celebration or to dine on the special food selections created by the folks at DJs and Downtown.
