POULTNEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRESENTS GREEN MOUNTAIN COLLEGE SENIOR HISTORY STUDENTS’ RESEARCH AT THE BENTLEY COMMUNITY CENTER ON SUNDAY, MAY 4TH, 3-4:30PM
Join the Poultney Historical Society and Green Mountain College for a free, special program on Sunday, May 4th at 3:00PM. Two Green Mountain College students will share their senior year capstone history projects, both based on original research in Vermont archives. The event will be held at the newly renovated Bentley Community Center at 348 Bentley Avenue, Poultney, Vermont.
The program features GMC graduating seniors Michael Magnotta, ‘14 and Dana Vocht, ’14. Ms. Vocht’s presentation, "Temperance: The Men's Phase in Addison County," is notable for being one of the first documented studies of the temperance movement (which urged moderation in the consumption of alcohol) that, contrary to common stereotypes, finds a group of men, not women, leading the crusade in Addison County.
Mr. Magnotta’s presentation, “Interpreting Archives: An Examination of the Fairbanks Archival Material,” is an award-winning analysis of the inadequacies, from the historian’s perspective, of the Northeast Kingdom archive that largely holds public relations materials.
Sunday's event is the fourth program in the Society’s 2013-2014 Poultney Historic Places Lecture Series. Besides a means of educating Poultney residents about Vermont’s past, Ina Smith Johnson said the series is intended to raise awareness of the community's history expressed in its buildings. "We hope [also] to draw the public's attention to the needs of the buildings so that they see them in a different light and continue to appreciate them," she said.
This event not only will be an opportunity to hear two outstanding college students’ findings into original archival research and engage in lively discussion about what they discovered, but also is a chance to see the stunning restoration of the former home of C.W. Humphrey, now the Bentley Community Center serving all of Poultney’s residents and students.
At this May lecture, donations will be collected for the benefit of the Poultney Historical Society’s Ruth E. Roberts History Education Fund, which provides resources for local history education in our community. The Society’s business meeting at 1p will precede the presentations.
