Bennington Groundwater Reclassification

The Agency of Natural Resources will be hosting a virtual public meeting on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at 6:00 PM to address any questions that you may have about the reclassification petition and draft decision.

The public comment period on the draft groundwater reclassification petition and draft reclassification decision (order) ends on May 28, 2021. Please submit your comments by this date.

The petition, draft decision, reclassification map, and fact sheets on the reclassification process are also available on our website and at the Bennington Town Offices, located at 205 South Street, Bennington VT 05201. If you want to review the reclassification documents at the Town Offices, please contact the Town at 802 442-1037 to set up an appointment.

The purpose of reclassifying this groundwater is to protect human health and safety by providing a formal notification to landowners, well drillers, and permitting agencies that groundwater is or may be contaminated by PFAS.

The Draft Reclassification Order includes recommended minimum well construction requirements for new drinking water wells. This condition was included because the drilling of a new well can be the only practical source for drinking water within parts of the proposed groundwater reclassification area.

The Draft Reclassification Order also takes into account that many wells within the area to be reclassified have no PFAS or PFAS levels below state standards and that these wells are being used, and can be continued to be used, for drinking water by the homeowners.
