THIS Friday, April 23rd, there will be a presentation by Brenna Galdenzi, the president of Protect Our Wildlife (POW) and hosted by the Living Earth Action Group.
Protect Our Wildlife is an all-volunteer, grassroots Vermont nonprofit organization that seeks better protections for wildlife. In a 2017 survey conducted by University of Vermont Center for Rural Studies, 75% of those who responded said "yes" when asked if Vermont should ban the use of steel jaw leghold, body gripping traps and any type of drowning traps. Part of Protect Our Wildlife's advocacy work focuses on not only the inherent cruelties involved with trapping, but the amount of non-target captures, including protected species like owls and pine marten.
Hunting a wild animal as humanely as possible, for sustenance, with respect for the life taken, is supported by many in Vermont. Trapping is not that. Traps injure, maim and kill otters, bobcats, foxes and other iconic Vermont wildlife every year all in the name of "recreation" or tradition. 9 states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Washington and 85 countries have either severely restricted trapping or banned it altogether. Learn how you can get involved.
