Announcement and Invitation from Harry Frank, Megs Keir and Breck Knauft
Huntington’s Representatives to the Voluntary Merger Planning Committee

In an effort to shape the Articles of Agreement for a unified school district, we will hold two community conversations to understand the values and aspirations that are important for our students and community. We hope you will join us.

These conversations will take place at the Brewster Pierce School.

Thursday May 1st (6:00-7:30pm)
Friday May 2nd (8:15-9:30am)

The meetings will begin with a presentation that details the status of work on the proposed merger of Chittenden East Supervisory Union, including a draft of the proposed new articles.

Following this presentation, the meetings will be organized around the following questions:

1. What do we want our students to learn?
2. How do we want our voice included in the governance of our schools?

We will ask everyone who attends to respond to the questions above in writing. In that way, we can be sure to gather everyone’s input.

Those who are not able to attend can submit their comments in writing. Please send them to the three Huntington representatives on the Voluntary Merger Planning Committee.

We will collect everyone’s written responses and add them to the themes we hear through the discussion period.

Background Information

In the spring of 2013, Chittenden East Supervisory Union’s member school boards voted to proceed with the statutory steps required to establish a Voluntary Merger Planning Committee (VMPC) and to begin studying the viability of one unified Prek-12 school district. The VMPC is focusing on a Modified Unified Union School District (MUUSD), one of the school district merger options outlined in Act 156.

The Voluntary Merger Planning Committee has been meeting at the CESU central office in Richmond on the 3rd Monday of the month, and recently has begun to schedule extra meetings on additional Mondays at different locations. Community members are welcome and encouraged to attend. See the CESU website (cesu.k12.vt.us, Voluntary Merger Discussion tab) for time and place of VMPC meetings. Committee meeting minutes can also be found on this website, along with links that provide an overview of the voluntary school district merger process, the CESU Phase I Governance Study completed in 2010 and a description of Modified Unified Union School Districts.
