topic: Tour the Long-Hidden VT Site of Shays' Rebel Settlement
After Captain Daniel Shays and his rebels fled Massachusetts in 1787 following their armed uprising to oppose new tax burdens and foreclosures on farms amid a debt crisis, they established a settlement well-hidden in the mountains of southern Vermont. Incredibly, this lost piece of American history lay unearthed until 2013.
On March 22 at 1:30 PM, join archaeologist and author Steve Butz, leader of the Shays' Settlement Project, for an on-line look at the ruins of the 18th century fortification, its artifacts from inhabitants' daily lives, and the ongoing work at the site. The Project has unearthed ruins of a fort, a mill, a tavern and living quarters, and the site is one of the most significant archaeological finds in Vermont.
