Scrag Mountain: Music of Adversity & Redemption

Past event
Mar 13, 2021, 7:30 PM

Join me and four incredible local musicians -- Mary Bonhag (soprano), Paul Orgel (piano), Mary Rowell (violin), and Emily Taubl (cello) -- for an online discussion and then performance of Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich's song-cycle "Seven Romances on Poems of Alexandr Blok." Written later in Shostakovich's life, when he was recovering in a hospital bed, these songs recalled Russia's Silver Age of his youth. They were written for beloved friends of his to perform -- friends who would soon defect from the Soviet Union. The songs themselves are about love, history, and fate -- but most of all, about the power of friendship and music in dark times.

The live discussion will be followed by a broadcast of these amazing Central Vermont musicians performing this searing Shostakovich song-cycle and, to close, the healing and tender music of Arvo Part's "Spiegel im Spiegel."

The discussion will be Saturday, March 13, at 7:30 pm EST, via Zoom:
