NHCC Armchair Naturalist On-Line Workshop

Mar 31, 2021, 7 to 8:30 PM

Vermont's Agency of Natural Resources has created some fantastic web-based mapping tools available for all to use for their own education, mapping, assessment and design. The Natural Resource Atlas and BioFinder databases both include a wealth of geographic and biological data on the landscapes of Vermont including topography, soils, geology, habitat types, riparian features, pollution and toxicity, parcel boundaries and much more. Although it can be a bit overwhelming to navigate these platforms as a beginner, once you learn to grow comfortable with them, you'll be amazed at how much you can learn about the places you live and love by spending some time getting to know them from above.

In this participatory Zoom-based workshop, land use planner, educator, and New Haven Conservation Commission member Mark Krawczyk will guide participants in the use of these databases, coaching you along the way. You'll learn how to locate your home site, turn on and off different data layers, identify features denoted on the map, measure length and area, and even create your own maps.

These conservation resources are invaluable assets to our community and we're eager to assist you in learning how to use them to benefit your own understanding, appreciation and participation with your landscape.

The workshop is scheduled for Wednesday March 31st at 7pm. You'll want to make sure you've got a secure internet connection in order to participate. We'd also recommend you to familiarize yourself with the platform in advance, visit https://anr.vermont.gov/maps/nr-atlas and/or https://anr.vermont.gov/maps/biofinder
