Through the auspices of the Warren United Church, I am facilitating a weekly Community Meditation on Zoom every Wednesday at 7:00 PM. This will be our sixth meeting this week. All are invited.
Originally intended for the Warren Church community, I was approached by others who were not part of the Warren Church who wanted to know if it would be appropriate for them. The answer is, it definitely is appropriate for anyone regardless of their religion or belief system. The basic idea is simply to create a space where people can go to get into a peaceful place, share that peace with one another, send it out, and go away feeling strengthened and refreshed. To quote the Peace Pledge which we recite at the beginning of every Warren Church service,
"When there is peace in the heart, there is peace in the home. When there is peace in the home, there is peace in the community. When there is peace in the community, there is peace in the nation. When there is peace in the nation, there is peace in the world. Let peace begin, right now, with me."
The intention is to offer a place to create that peace, and spread it. It is a guided meditation with space for silence. I draw from my experience with Buddhist practice and the Christian teaching to love one another, as well as Mindfulness Practice. There is a big overlap between some Buddhist meditation practices and some Christian contemplative practices. Not only that, but present-day "evidenced-based" Mindfulness practice in psychotherapy backed by neuroscientific research has validated meditation as a tool to combat anxiety and depression, as well as myriad other health benefits.
Finally, a fourth element I bring in is to ground our consciousness to Mother Earth. The aim is to hit that Venn diagram where the four meet. "There is so much more that unites us than separates us," and "We're all in this together," are the operating principles. We face challenges unlike anything before in our history right now. It has never been more urgent than now to work towards unity and affirm our love for this planet.
