This Sunday's "Cozy up to a Read" features local author and teacher River Buffum, reading from two picture books, "Morgan's List," written by our guest reader herself, and "Tear Soup, A Recipe for Healing After Loss," by Pat Schwiebert and Chuck DeKlyen.
Both books are not only about grief and loss, but also about life and healing.
We all experience losses every day, some big and some small. Some we move on from after a deep breath, while others can take us down. Both of these books speak to the latter.
"Morgan's List" was written for River's seven-year-old niece. The picture book was written for her family going through the unimaginable…the impending loss of a child. Written with the intention of bringing peace to an incredibly painful time, "Morgan's List" has subsequently been used to comfort people suffering from various losses, and offers a different perspective on life and death.
"Tear Soup" is a favorite picture book of River's, that speaks to the personal and sacred journey of grieving.
Both books are suitable for all ages. They address the sometimes difficult topic of death and the beauty that is always present, though at times difficult to see.
River Buffum lives in Waterbury with her husband and two children. She wrote and published Morgan's List in 2010, and is the author of a blog entitled "Seeds of the Soul." She has been practicing meditation for 25 years, and has recently been teaching meditation and energy work locally.
