Cultural Impacts of Language on Identity and Advocacy for People with Disabilities
A unique virtual seminar on helping young Vermonters find their voice.
When: Monday, December 14, 2020, 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Who: Willow is a senior studying at the University of Vermont, pursuing a degree in anthropology and linguistics. In the past years, they have been involved with working and volunteering at UVM's pottery co-op, where Willow shares their love of ceramics and throwing pottery with others. In becoming more involved with activism across various identities and issues, they gained an interest in the intersections with disability identity. By using the service learning approach, VCIL is partnering with CDCI/UVM to make this dream a reality in the lives of students through the Culture of Disability Course.
Why: Willow connected with the Youth Transition Program of VCIL through the Culture of Disabilities class to work towards the research topic: "Cultural Impacts of Language on Identity and Advocacy for People with Disabilities. Through interviews with people with disabilities, this presentation will highlight and uplift the strengths that people have found in overcoming challenges and notions within our society.
Join us to hear from fellow youth who has already done the research and find out what they have learned that could help you!
