Talk on Internatural Communication

Past event

Internatural communication has been the key scholarship focus for Lee Crocker, Associate Professor of Communication at Landmark College where she teaches a course titled Animal and Human Communication.

How important is nature to humans? What has happened over the course of history that has brought some of us to a place where we degrade our environment and see animals as machines to benefit us, not as beings to care for? Rhetoric in science and academia have contributed to this loss of care for nature, but now developments in science and a better understanding of human and animal interaction are bringing about a seed change in culture. As US citizens spent $95.7 billion on their pets last year, we see in dollar amounts the economic importance of pets to us. We value animals and nature on many levels beyond the economy too. The economy and internatural relationships are interrelated. In this discussion, Lee will describe the history of human relationships with nature. That nature does communicate and does interrelate with us is a key focus of the discussion. Lee will describe a vision of care for nature that offers a contrast to the othering of animals and the environment."
