Our Writer to Writer: Conversations on Craft & Featured Readings series pairs VSC alumni and friends together to discuss all aspects of being a working writer. These live virtual events are a window into a writer's life and also provide access to, and a platform for, diverse voices and writing talent across genres. Conversations may touch on craft, literary friendship, publishing, sustaining a writing practice, and more.

Afaa M. Weaver’s work A Hard Summation was published in 2014, and his most recent book of poems is Spirit Boxing. A Guggenheim fellow, his Professor Emeritus at Simmons U, and in semi-retirement he teaches at Sarah Lawrence.

Gary Copeland Lilley is the author of eight books of poetry, the most recent being The Bushman's Medicine Show, from Lost Horse Press (2017), and a chapbook, The Hog Killing, from Blue Horse Press (2018). He is originally from North Carolina and now lives in the Pacific Northwest. He has received the Washington DC Commission on the Arts Fellowship for Poetry. He is published in numerous anthologies and journals. He is a Cave Canem Fellow.

Sebastian Matthews is the author, most recently, of the memoir, Beyond Repair: Living in a Fractured State (Red Hen Press, 2020), and of the memoir In My Father’s Footsteps (W.W. Norton & Co.) as well as two collections of poetry, We Generous and Miracle Day, both published by Red Hen Press. A third collection, Beginner’s Guide to a Head-on Collision, came out from Red Hen Press in 2017. Along with Stanley Plumly, Matthews is the co-editor of three volumes: The Poetry Blues: Essays and Interviews of William Matthews (University of Michigan Press), Search Party: The Collected Poems of William Matthews (Houghton Mifflin), a runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize, and New Hope for the Dead: Uncollected Matthews (Red Hen Press).
