Past event
Apr 30, 2014, 7 PM

Please join us on April 30th at 7 PM at the Big Picture in Waitsfield for the premiere of a unique documentary film exploring the history and future of the Mad River Valley’s hill farms. Drawing on historic photos and documents, and interviews with current & past farmers, the film explores how the evolution of land use and agriculture in Vermont has shaped our iconic landscape. From the early farmers who cleared the hillsides, to today’s agricultural entrepreneurs, "Hill Farming in the Mad River Valley" considers the challenges of farming the more fertile floodplain soils and illuminates the significance of higher elevation farm land to our heritage and our continued agricultural vitality.

This free event serves as capstone to the Mad River Hill Farm Research Project, undertaken by the Mad River Valley Planning District and the Mad River Valley Rural Resource Commission - with funding from the Vermont Division of Historic Preservation. In addition to the documentary film, directed by Meg Campbell, the project also produced a historical essay, researched and written by Lyssa Papazian. The historical essay is available for download at http://mrvpd.org/.

The Mad River Vally Hill Farm Research Project was awarded 2013 Project of the Year by both the Vermont Planners Association - VPA and the Northern New England Chapter of the American Planning Association.
