Honoring Jeff Tolbert

On October 25 at Lyman Point Park in White River Junction, the cast of BarnArts' It Can't Happen Here will do an end-of-tour final performance in honor of cast member Jeff Tolbert, who died on October 15.

For BarnArts 2020 remounting of the show, Jeff was especially drawn to the character of Doremus Jessup, a mild-mannered and basically optimistic small-town newspaper editor who decides to take a stand against tyranny when his country is transformed by the presidential election of a dictator.

"Jeff spoke of the urgency of doing this play during our chaotic election season," says BarnArts executive director Linda Treash, "and how important it is to find ways of performing live for in-person audiences, at a time when most theaters are shut down. He loved the idea of doing a play with Vermont roots that in the 1930s was brought to seventeen communities across the U.S. as part of a New Deal program called the Federal Theater Project."

Staged in the style of an old-fashioned radio drama with standing microphones, allowing for ample distance between actors and viewers, the performance will follow state guidelines for outdoor public events.

Sunday, October 25, 2 pm: Lyman Point Park, 167 Maple Street, White River Junction, Vermont

Reservations are encouraged and can be made at the BarnArts website: http://www.barnarts.org/.
Ticket pricing is sliding scale, with $5–25 per person suggested.
