Managing the ACF for Carbon and Climate Change Event

Past event
Oct 22, 2020, 7 to 8 PM

Hi all,
Sorry for the double post today -- I ran out of space and wanted to promote this event coming up next week with Dr. Ali Kosiba, Vermont's Climate Forester. This event will focus on how we manage forests for carbon and climate change, and how the work we're doing at the ACF is in support of this. See details and how to register below!

Climate Change, Carbon, and Forest Management at the Andrews Community Forest
Thursday, October 22
7:00 – 8:00 PM

Climate change, shifts in disturbance regimes, and an increasing prevalence of non-native invasive insects, diseases, plants and animals have created considerable uncertainty around how to best care for our forests into the future. In response to this challenge, forest stewards and managers are adapting their management techniques to sustain key forest ecosystem functions, including wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration, and water cycling, under novel environmental conditions.

Responsible forest management can help our forests adapt and respond to a changing climate, encouraging the growth of healthy forests with massive carbon benefits while producing local renewable resources. At the Andrews Community Forest (ACF), a conserved 428-acre property owned by the Town of Richmond, a forest management project is underway with these goals: to make forests at the ACF more diverse, complex and resilient, while protecting their ability to sequester and store carbon and making them more like old growth forests.

Join Dr. Ali Kosiba, the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation's Climate Forester, and Ethan Tapper, the Chittenden County Forester, for a webinar discussing the effects of climate change on our forests, and opportunities to manage for adaptation and resilience in a changing climate.

This event is one of a series of virtual events and learning opportunities designed to help the public engage and learn about this work in the midst of pandemic. You can learn more about these learning opportunities by emailing Ethan at ethan.tapper@vermont.gov, signing up for his mailing list, or staying tuned to the Andrews Community Forest playlist on the Chittenden County Forester YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWk3DKdWmNIb5VOql7MqxJ09GqXg0kPVl) and ACF Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/AndrewsCommunityForest).
