Sandra Gibson (b. 1968, Portland, OR) and Luis Recoder (b. 1971, San Francisco, CA) have exhibited their celebrated expanded cinema performances and installations since 2000. Their works are in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Memorial Art Gallery, Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, and Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf. Their inaugural foray into the protocinematic technique of the camera obscura, titled Topsy-Turvy: A Camera Obscura Installation, was commissioned in 2010 by the public arts organization Mad.Sq.Art and exhibited in 2013 at Madison Square Park in NY. During a residency at the Exploratorium in 2016 they exhibited another iteration titled Obscurus Projectum in which a screening room was converted into a large-scale camera obscura with a view toward the San Francisco bay. Special thanks to Visual Arts Program Manager of Vermont Studio Center Kristen Mills for coordinating the installation of The Parallax View. Gibson + Recoder live and work in NY.
