Fascism—Then and Now: DSA Study Group (4th of 4)

Past event
Oct 13, 2020, 7 to 8:30 PM

In countries throughout the world, authoritarian politicians as well as far-right parties and formations have become a danger. Donald Trump has galvanized a new right within and beyond the Republican Party. Neo-fascist Jair Bolsonaro rules in Brazil, Hindu Fundamentalist Narendra Modi is in control of India, and Marine Le Pen's National Rally contend for power in France.

Join local Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) for the last of a four-part Zoom-based discussion on the nature of fascism and today's far right. Having discussed Clara Zetkin's classic analysis "Fighting Fascism: How to Struggle and How to Win" we move to contemporary socialist analyses of the far right and fascism internationally.

For the 13th we'll read short essays offering different perspectives: Renton, "The New Mainstream" (https://jacobinmag.com/2019/05/european-parliament-election-far-right-parties); Wolfreys, "When "Anti-Populism" Makes the Far Right Mainstream" (https://www.jacobinmag.com/2020/01/marine-le-pen-france-far-right-populism-macron-islamophobia); Bennhold, "Germany's Far Right Reunified, Too, Making It Much Stronger" (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/03/world/europe/germany-reunification-far-right.html); Seymour, "Nigel Farage Is the Most Dangerous Man in Britain" (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/28/opinion/nigel-farage-brexit.html); Arcary, "Is Bolsonaro a neofascist?" (https://socialistworker.org/2018/10/24/is-bolsonaro-a-neofascist); and Vanaik, "Modi Might Have Finally Gone Too Far" (https://jacobinmag.com/2019/12/narendra-modi-india-citizenship-amendment-act-muslims-bjp).
